Forex API Broker Checklist: Documents to Request First
A forex API broker checklist should start with documents, not a connection demonstration. You need to know which legal entity holds the account, what the product terms say and what access the application requests. A working interface cannot establish those facts on its own.
Use this guide to assemble an evidence file before evaluating an integration. It recommends no broker or software and provides no trading instructions. Each checklist item asks for a scoped document or explanation, with missing information left visible rather than replaced by a marketing claim.
Identify the parties in the forex API broker checklist
List the account provider, software operator and any separate platform provider. Keep their roles distinct. Ask which party supplies each service and which agreement covers it. A shared brand name can make a service look unified while leaving several contractual questions unanswered.
Record the legal name from the account agreement, along with its effective date. Ask the broker to clarify any difference between that name and its website branding. Do not assume that a parent company, group affiliate or integration partner is the entity responsible for your account.
Request the account agreement first
The CFTC’s US OTC forex advisory tells readers to research dealers and review their account agreement, rights, funding and withdrawal conditions. Its US context matters. Do not apply a US registration statement as proof of permissions or protections in another jurisdiction.
Save the agreement as a dated reference. Ask which entity, account type and products it covers. A terms page for a different group company does not automatically answer your account question. Keep the applicable version rather than merging extracts from several documents into a new informal agreement.
Find the relevant registration and permissions record
Use the appropriate regulator’s official tools for the contracting entity and service. For UK checks, the FCA Firm Checker guidance explains checking a firm’s authorization for the relevant service. Follow the regulator’s current instructions and retain the result with its date.
Keep this legal-entity review separate from API compatibility. A platform connection cannot replace the official record. If a provider’s claim and the record appear different, ask for clarification without inventing a conclusion about the discrepancy.
Obtain the actual API documentation
Request the current integration reference, supported environments, authentication process and error documentation. Ask which version the application implements. A screenshot of an integration logo supplies much less information than a reference that identifies the requests and permitted operations.
For example, cTrader’s official introduction describes a specific API service with its own capabilities and constraints. Treat it as an example of the documentation category, not evidence that every forex broker offers the same API. Your checklist needs the reference for the actual service under review.
Ask for account eligibility in writing
State the intended account type and environment, then ask whether the integration supports them. Include the product category you want to understand. A broad claim that a broker supports APIs may leave eligibility for your particular account unresolved.
Save the answer beside the technical reference. If it concerns a different account or market, request a corrected scope. Do not turn a capability statement about one configuration into a claim that every customer can use the same workflow.
Review access scope and data handling
Request a plain explanation of the permissions the application needs and the information it stores. Keep viewing account information separate from performing account operations. Ask why the proposed scope is necessary for the stated service.
Use the service’s documented authorization process rather than sharing credentials in a support message. This checklist includes no access token, secret or executable sample. It can be completed as a document review before any application receives account access.
A document matrix for the forex API broker checklist
| Document | Question it answers | Scope to retain |
|---|---|---|
| Account agreement | Who contracts with the customer? | Entity, account type and effective date |
| Official regulatory record | Which relevant authorization is stated? | Jurisdiction, service and observation date |
| API reference | What interface does the application implement? | Version and supported environment |
| Permission explanation | What access does the application request? | Accounts and operations covered |
| Fee schedule | Which costs apply? | Product, units, timing and account |
| Support process | Who answers an issue at each stage? | Contact route and response records |
Include a source link and unresolved questions in every row. A document title alone is not enough: it must match the entity and configuration being reviewed. Keep a missing item missing until the responsible party supplies an applicable answer.
Costs belong in a separate schedule
Ask for the product fee schedule and any separate charges associated with the integration or software. Keep billing parties distinct. A platform price does not establish the broker’s trading costs, and a broker spread advertisement does not establish software fees.
Record the unit and timing for each stated charge. If the documents disagree, ask the relevant provider to reconcile them. This article gives no broker-specific prices and does not estimate a total from incomplete inputs.
Execution and technical access are different documents
Request the broker’s execution policy for the relevant product, alongside the API reference. Ask where acceptance, rejection and actual execution appear in the account record. A response from an application is not automatically a complete broker receipt.
Keep the software’s decision process separate from the broker’s treatment of an instruction. These sources answer different questions. A comparison becomes clearer when it shows which component owns each stage rather than treating the whole chain as one undocumented action.
Support responsibility needs an owner
Identify the contact route for account terms, API behavior and application errors. Ask which records each party needs to investigate a problem. A developer may explain its code without being able to interpret every broker agreement clause.
Before sharing troubleshooting material, remove secrets and unnecessary personal information. State the environment and the precise question. A targeted request is more useful than sending an entire account record without explaining which stage is unclear.
Preserve the review as a dated file
Name the evidence file for the entity and account configuration, then add the review date. Retain older documents as historical references if a term or version changes. Do not silently overwrite an old observation with a current claim.
A future change to permissions, endpoint or contracting entity needs its own entry. Ask which previous answers remain applicable. This is a method for maintaining traceable evidence, not a certification that the service is suitable or safe under every condition.
Frequently asked questions
Does a successful connection complete this checklist?
No. It can establish a narrow technical observation while leaving agreement, costs, permissions and support questions unresolved. Record the observed stage without treating it as a complete service review.
Can I use another broker’s API guide?
Use it only as a labelled comparison. It cannot establish the actual service’s requests, eligibility or terms. Ask for the applicable current reference and retain its scope.
What if a document is missing?
Keep the question open and request the document from the responsible party. The forex API broker checklist is useful precisely because it shows gaps. A polished marketing page should not fill a missing contractual or technical answer.
