cTrader API Connection: Check Endpoints and Account Context
A cTrader API connection has several distinct stages: selecting an endpoint, establishing transport, authorizing the application and identifying the account. A connection indicator answers only part of that sequence. Before interpreting a response, record which environment and account the software actually uses.
This guide explains the official documentation and supplies a troubleshooting worksheet. It does not connect an account, provide executable trading code or recommend granting software access. The objective is a clear explanation of the connection’s context and the evidence behind it.
Start with the cTrader API connection environment
The official endpoint guide separates demo and live environments. Accounts must match the relevant environment. It also distinguishes the ports used for JSON and Protobuf messages. Check the current table rather than treating any reachable endpoint as interchangeable.
Write the intended environment before reviewing the actual configuration. Ask the developer to identify the host and message format without revealing secrets. Retain the configuration date and application version. A screenshot labelled “connected” is insufficient if it omits the destination and account context.
For the format check, use the current port mapping in the official endpoint table. Put the chosen format and its documented connection settings in the same worksheet row. This is a configuration reference, not an instruction to connect a live account. If a supplier’s sample uses a different host or format, ask which current documentation supports that sample before using it as evidence of your own setup.
Transport is different from authorization
cTrader’s connection tutorial describes TCP and WebSocket options and requires SSL for a TCP connection. It separately says an established connection must pass application authorization. This distinction prevents a successful transport step from being described as a fully authorized account session.
Ask which record confirms each stage. The application’s user interface may combine several statuses into one symbol. Request the explanation behind that symbol and the relevant response record. Do not infer account permission from a green connection icon alone.
Identify the account after the application
The official authentication guide describes application and account authentication as separate messages in its flow. Record the account selected for the exercise and its environment. If several accounts are accessible, ask how the application chooses between them.
Keep the account identifier in a private worksheet rather than a public screenshot. The goal is to establish that the observed record belongs to the intended context. It does not require sharing passwords, tokens or application secrets with a reviewer.
A cTrader API connection worksheet
| Stage | Evidence to request |
|---|---|
| Environment | Selected demo or live endpoint and current reference |
| Format | JSON or Protobuf choice and matching configuration |
| Transport | The application’s supported connection status record |
| Application | The documented authorization response |
| Account | The intended account and selection process |
| Operation | The actual response for the particular request |
Add a time column and an unresolved column. A completed earlier stage does not fill an unanswered later row. Ask the party responsible for the relevant component to supply its evidence. Avoid combining an old authorization response with a new session without establishing their relationship.
Read responses before assigning a cause
When a request fails, describe the observed response separately from the expected result. Ask the developer which documented message or error field explains it. A broad statement that the connection “does not work” can conceal several different questions.
For example, an endpoint question differs from an account-selection question. Retain both if both remain unresolved. Do not change unrelated configuration fields simply to make a status indicator disappear. A coherent explanation is more useful than a screenshot that hides the original uncertainty.
Ask how the connection stays active
The official connection tutorial includes heartbeat and message-queue guidance. Ask the developer how the application implements the current requirements and where relevant records appear. This article does not supply a timing algorithm or certify an implementation.
Keep that question separate from account authorization. Maintaining a transport connection does not establish every permission or operation. Review the actual configuration and the documented behavior rather than assuming all stages share the same status.
Reconnection needs a documented process
Ask what the application does after an interruption. Which account context does it re-establish, and which records does it inspect before continuing? Request the supported process and its limits. Avoid treating the return of a connection icon as proof that every local record is current.
For an account-changing request with an uncertain response, ask how the software reconciles state. This guide recommends no retry or trading action. It identifies the question that the developer and account provider need to answer using the relevant records.
A fictional observation exercise
Imagine a demo-only exercise whose purpose is identifying the endpoint and selected account. The observer saves the non-sensitive configuration and the documented response. The completed worksheet states what those records establish and which later stages were outside the exercise.
A later request to add trading functionality requires a separate review. Do not rewrite the original observation as proof of capabilities it did not examine. A limited successful check remains useful when its scope stays clear.
Keep software versions in the record
Record the application version and relevant configuration date alongside each observation. If either changes, ask the developer whether the earlier explanation still applies. Save the answer rather than relying on memory about the previous setup.
Historical screenshots can explain a past issue without describing the current session. Label them accordingly. A clear version history avoids combining records from different configurations into one apparently complete connection story.
Support requests should name the stage
State whether you need help with endpoint selection, transport, application authorization, account identification or an operation response. Include the environment, time basis and non-sensitive response information. Remove credentials and unnecessary account details from attachments.
Ask for the exact documentation supporting the answer. If support discusses a different environment or message format, request clarification. A reply about one stage may be helpful while leaving another question open; retain that distinction in your worksheet.
Connection success is a narrow finding
A technical connection observation does not establish live execution quality, cost, legal protection or future returns. Those questions require their own account documents and evidence. Keep a broker comparison separate from the connection worksheet.
This article reports no measured latency or live connection test. If a supplier makes a performance claim, ask for its method, environment and scope. Do not use a platform capability statement as a substitute for the missing measurement.
Frequently asked questions
Does transport success prove account authorization?
No. The official tutorial treats connection and authorization separately. Request the relevant account-context evidence before describing the session as fully established.
Can I mix demo and live account contexts?
The official endpoint guide requires matching environments. Check the actual account and endpoint rather than assuming the application name tells you which environment it uses.
Does connection mean the software is suitable?
No such conclusion follows. A cTrader API connection describes technical access. Review permission scope, documented behavior and account terms separately before evaluating a service.
